What Are PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)?

The human body requires hydrochloric acid to properly digest food. The body’s organ that produces this acid in the stomach is called a proton pump. Between the stomach and esophagus is a muscle to help stop this stomach acid from migrating into the esophagus. In some cases, this muscle fails to close correctly. When this happens, stomach acid can travel into the throat area. This produces pain in the esophagus and chest area. PPI medications help reduce or inhibit the amount of hydrochloric acid that the body produces.

What Are PPI Drugs Used For?

Proton pump inhibitor drugs are prescribed and bought over-the-counter by those who experience an overproduction of stomach acid. People who suffer from common symptoms such as heartburn also use proton pump inhibitors. The use of PPIs can be related to the treatment of the following conditions:

Side Effects of PPIs

Proton pump inhibitors work effectively, but if misused, they can be quite harmful. High doses of PPI medications should be avoided to prevent serious long-term side effects. Below are some of the serious side effects that can occur from the use of proton pump inhibitors:

Claims Against PPI Manufacturers

Research on the Dangers of PPI Drugs

In 2010, two separate studies found new concerns over the potential side effects of proton pump inhibitor use. The studies found that PPI drugs increase the risk of bone fractures. However, the FDA determined that this risk only applies to patients taking high doses and over a long period of time. As a result, the FDA did not require additional warnings on PPI drug labels.

In 2016, a study published by JAMA’s Internal Medicine found that patients using PPI drugs have between a 20% and 50% increased risk for chronic kidney damage. During the same year, other studies found that the use of PPI drugs causes a 21% increased risk of stroke. It was also found that PPI users have a 50% higher 5-year death rate compared to other antacid medications such as H2 inhibitors.

In 2017, a study conducted by the Department of Veteran Affairs found more evidence of kidney damage linked to PPI drugs. The study found that PPIs have a higher risk of kidney failure compared to H2 inhibitors. The study involved 125,596 patients taking PPIs and compared them to 18,436 people taking H2 inhibitors. About 10% of the patients taking PPI drugs developed chronic kidney disease, but less than half of those patients showed signs of kidney failure. Patients were at end-stage renal disease and required transplants or dialysis by the time kidney disease was detected. Around 7% of patients taking H2 inhibitors developed chronic kidney disease, and 1.3% developed kidney failure.
